Dr Beebani demands ban on Meer Taqi Meer and Ghalib
===========================
Article by Dr Muhammad Karim Beebani
Meer Taqi Meer and Mirza Ghalib are two well-known and famous poets of Urdu language and their fame knows no bounds.
In Pakistan their poetry forms an important component of the curriculum at all levels where Urdu language is taught.
I, however regret to say that both the two pioneers of Urdu poetry have written many blasphemic verses, which are included in the poetry collection of both. There is a sheer desecration of Islamic sanctuaries, legacy and religion in the Deewan of both the Urdu poetry giants which is so inexcusable that it can easily turn a person out of the fold of Islam.
Very frequently one can note that the poetry books of both the so called masters of Urdu ghazal carry fierce attacks on Holy Ka’ba, Islamic rituals and noble personalities of Islam like angel Jibrael. As far as the sanctity of Ka'ba is concerned who does not know about it. Allah has Himself mentioned in the Holy Qur'an about the sacred nature of Ka'ba by calling it the first house of Allah on earth. Allah called Ka'ba as mobarak or full of blessings and a source of guidance. Similarly there are many sayings of the noble prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in which the sanctity and importance of Holy Ka'ba has been sufficiently highlighted but the two poets despite being so called Muslims wrote many verses, which are clearly insulting and highly deplorable.
Although these attacks on the honor of Holy Ka'ba and other Islamic rituals have been made in poetry they cannot be considered null and void, as their meanings are very tacit and easily understood by even a layman.
I call upon Muslims express their resentment and remorse and to raise a voice against these poetry books and enforce a ban upon the works of these two poets in Pakistan and to especially struggle for banishing them from the syllabus at all levels. A selection of Urdu poetry from both the poets is an integral part of curriculum in Urdu language at almost all levels at present.
Muslims must express their outrage at the inclusion of such blasphemic poets in the syllabus. These verses could contain innovative ideas but at the cost of our religion and religious values they are not at all tolerable. Most probably the two poets wrote such verses to regale their listeners but can a Muslim be delighted and content with such a blasphemy is not understandable. It is too much baffling and perplexing to read such dishonorable and discreditable remarks about the Holy Ka'ba and a good Muslim should not vanquish his anguish and resentment unless this non-sense poetry is removed from the shelves of all bookstores in Pakistan and possibly from other countries. This poetry is no less than sedition and these poets did not give a respectable start to Urdu poetry. They introduced highly dangerous attitudes in the world of Urdu literature.
Many verses of Meer Taqi Meer in which he had expressed his hatred toward Holy Ka'ba, mosque, angel Jibrael, Imam-e-Ka'ba and even Islam can be found in his Deewan and they of course do not tally with the aspirations of millions of staunch Muslims all over the world. To know about the on-slaught of these jagged anti-Islamic verses let us start from the following verse of Meer Taqi Meer:
MUJHE ZANHAR KHOSH AATA NAHIN KAB'E KA HUMSAYA
SANAM-KHANA HE YAAN AE SHEIKH TOO NE KIYUN NA BUNWAYA
It is very clear that in the above verse Meer Taqi Meer expresses his hatred to be a neighbor of Ka'ba and condemns the religious Sheikh for not making a pagan-house instead of Ka'ba.
See another verse:
JUNGLE MAIN KHIZR-O-KA'BE KA HONA MERI TARAH
DOONUN KI NA-RASAI KE OOPER DALEEL HE
In this verse Meer Taqi Meer says that as Khizar and Ka'ba are situated in a forest they do not have any importance or approach. This is again a distortion of what we learn from ahadith, which clearly mention that there are many places in the vicinity of Ka'ba where the prayer of a Muslim is certainly accepted by Allah.
In another verse Meer Taqi Meer directly insults Ka'ba:
------------------------------------
MEER UTH BUTKADE SE K'ABA GAYA
KYA KARE JO KHUDA KHARAB KARE
------------------------------------------
In the above verse Meer considers his going to Ka'ba as a tragedy or suffering for him whereas Muslims all over the world enthusiastically visit Holy Ka'ba and consider it as a journey of their life.
In another verse Meer Taqi Meer recalls the time of pagan days when Ka'ba was full of idols and says that after them the Ka'ba has become barren and useless.
The verse is:
SHEIKH KYA SOORATAIN REHTI THEEN BHALA JUB THA DAIR
RU BA WEERANI HO IS KA'BE KE WEERANI KA
In another verse Meer Taqi Meer considers the residential area of his beloved to be superior to Ka'ba which may be a good poetic thought but religiously not at all acceptable as the prestige of Ka'ba is far above any other house on earth. Meer says:
TERE KOOCHE KE REHNE WALOON NE
YAHEEN SE KA'BE KO SALAM KYA
Meer Taqi Meer not only used the word Ka'ba in a highly deplorable and insulting manner he did not spare he also desecrated other Islamic rituals. For example he attacks Imam-e-Ka'ba by saying that he fought with him the whole night when he stayed in Ka'ba for a night. Imam-e-Ka'ba is an extremely respectable figure in Muslim world and his insult cannot be tolerable for Muslims.
Meer says:
RAAT KO THA KA'BE MAIN, MAIN BHI SHEIKH-E-HARAM SE LARAI HOI
SAKHT KUDOORAT BEECH MAIN AAE SUBHA TALAK NA SAFAI HOI
The question is that why Muslims have tolerated such type of blasphemic poetry for the past more than 200 years. One obvious reason is that how many of us or the previous generations have read their complete Deewan, which is full of blasphemic and anti-Islamic verses. Yet we cherish the memory of these so called Ustad poets and we have kept their filthy poetry close to our chests.
In another verse Meer exposes his hatred against Muslim scholars when he says that he has no relation with the religious or fiqh problems and that he trampled the face of the sheikh (person having religious person) in the mosque. The verse is:
MUJH MUST KO KYA NISBAT AE MEER MASAEL SE
MUNH SHIEKH KA MASJID MAIN, MAIN RUK KE MASAL DALA
In yet another verse Meer Taqi Meer considers himself to be ruined as he was in Ka'ba:
KHANA-ABAD KAB'E MAIN THA MEER
KYA KHODAI KHARAB HE WO BHIE
In a verse akin to the above thoughts Meer Taqi Meer says that as long as he was in Ka'ba he was dying because of being away from the idols to the extent that he nearly died. The verse is:
KAB'E MAIN JAAN-BALUB THE HUM DOORI-E-BUTAAN SE
AAE HAIN PHIR KE YARO UB KE KHUDA KE HAAN SE
In another verse Meer prefers the wine-house to be superior to a mosque by saying that the mosque is not filled as is the wine house. The verse is:
MASJID AESI BHARI BHARI KYA HE
MEKADA IK JAHAN HE GOYA
It is noteworthy that the respect of a mosque is incumbent upon all Muslims as it is called house of Allah. So much so that there are ahadith in which it has been stressed that after entering a mosque for any prayer two Rak'a should be offered as a compliment to the mosque but here the so-called pioneer of Urdu poetry tries to vandalize the respect of the mosque by preferring a wine-house over it. The question is that is this anything less than what was done by Salman Rushdee due to which Muslims expressed their outrage and anguish to condemn his book and to ban it.
Meer Taqi Meer did not even spare Holy Qur'an and there are verses in which he used the simile of the face of his beloved to that of Qur'an, which is totally not acceptable and is a heinous sin. Holy Qur'an is a sacred book of God and its name should not be used for such worldly similes. A difference between divine and human should always be maintained.
See the three verses of Meer Taqi Meer in this context:
TERA RUKH-E-MUKHATTAT QUR'AN HE HAMARA
BOSA BHI LAIN TO KYA HE EEMAN HE HAMARA
-------------------------------------------
LYA DIL US MUKHATTAT RU NE MERA
UTHA LUUN MAIN USE QUR'AN PUR SE
---------------------------------------------
MUT MANIO KE HO GA PARE DARD AHL-E-DEEN
GUR AWE GA SHEIKH PEHAN KE JAMA QUR'AN KA
In yet another verse Meer Taqi Meer mentions about the Juma prayer in a very disgraceful manner. Juma has been called the leader of all the days (sayed-ul-Ayyam ) and Juma prayer is considered as very important to offer as it has more importance than other prayers but look what Meer Taqi Meer says:
BAGHI NAMAZ-E-JUMA TO JATI NAHIN KUCH
CHALTA HUUN MAIN BHI TUK TO RAHO MAIN NASHE MAIN HUUN
Circumambulation is considered as an important Islamic ritual, which has great blessings. Muslims all over the world throng Makkah Mokarrama to worship in Haram mosque in which they also circumambulate seven times around Holy Ka'ba but Meer Taqi Meer calls it a tragedy to do circumambulation and says that it is better if he will sit in Kanisht. (Note Kanisht is the prayer place of Parsians). Meer says:
KUB TUK KHARAB-E-SAE-E-TAWAF-E-HARAM RAHUUN
DIL KO UTHA KE BAITH RAHUUN GA KANISHT MAIN
In another verse Meer Taqi Meer insults angel Jibrael by calling him a lowest servant of his family.
KYA KHANDAAN KA APNE TUJH SE KAHAIN TAQUDDUS
ROOH-UL-QUDUS IK ADNA DARBAAN HE HAMARA
In another verse Meer Taqi Meer completely distorts the image of Islam by saying that kufr or non-belief is needed for Islam to flourish. He says:
KUFR KUCH CHAHEYE ISLAM KI RAUNAQ KELEYE
HUSN ZANNAR HE TASBEEH-E-SULAIMANI KA
Meer Taqi Meer despite all of this, claim that he was custodian of Makkah for whole life but now he became a beggar of wine-house. Bringing the custodian of Makkah to that level is also a desecration and insult of this highly venerated duty of pilgrims and Hajj. He says:
SHARIF-E-MAKKAH RAHA HE TAMAM UMR AE SHEIKH
YE MEER UB JO GADA HE SHARAB-KHANE KA
Lastly if we carefully read his poetry collection we realize that he himself was aware of what he is writing. In fact there is no doubt that he clearly enunciates his disregard with Islam and his association with the non-believers and pagan ways. He says
KAFIR HAMARE DIL KI NA POOCH APNE ISHQ MAIN
BAIT-UL-HARAM THA SO WO BAIT-UL-ZAMEER HOA
He also feels pride in expressing his association with the wine club rather than mosque. He says:
TUJH KO MASJID HE MUJHKO MAIKHANA
WA-EZA APNI APNI QISMAT HE
In another verse he clearly admits that he came in Holy Ka'ba as a non-believer:
AAE HAIN MEER KAFIR HO KUR KHUDA KE GHAR MAIN
PESHANI PUR HE QASHQA ZANNAR HE KAMAR MAIN
And very finally look at this verse of Meer Taqi Meer in which he so vividly admits that he is no more a Muslim.
MEER KE DEEN-O-MUZHAB KO UB POOCHTE KYA HO UN NE TO
QASHQA KHAINCHA, DAIR MAIN BETHA KUB KA TURK ISLAM KYA
The question is that can a borderline Muslim render words like this. Anyone who is a Muslim will lay down his life but will never say that he has abandoned the faith of Islam. In short the blasphemic poetry of Meer Taqi Meer deems it necessary that instead of including it in the curriculum it should be banned completely. We being Muslims should not encourage such anti-Islamic thoughts and should raise a strong voice them to safe the Muslim children from the poetry of these hypocrites. Even if Meer Taqi Meer did not mean by these verses his comments about the most venerated sanctuaries of Islam are not acceptable and do not deserve any mercy
================================================
Just like Meer Taqi Meer, the Urdu poetry of Mirza Ghalib contains blasphemic verses which are not at all tolerable and are a heinous insult of Muslim ummah and a clear violation and disrespect of Islamic teachings and sanctuaries.
For example Mirza Ghalib says about Holy Ka'ba:
BUNDAGI MAIN BHI WO AZAD-O-KUSH BEEN HAIN KE HUM
ULTE DUR AAE DAR-E-KA'BA SE GUR WA NA HOA
Ghalib says that in worship as well he is so proud and conscious of self-esteem that if the Ka'ba door did not open for him he will return back immediately.
This verse is clearly a blasphemy. Ka'ba is the house of Allah and is the center of worship in prayers for all Muslims of the world. Where ever the Muslims are they face toward Holy Ka'ba to offer their prayers. To visit Ka'ba is the great desire of every Muslim and on approaching Ka'ba every Muslim finds tears in his eyes, which are a symbol of his gratitude and his attachment with his spiritual center. But if a person is so proud that he considers his respect more than the Ka'ba and its door then it is nothing more than an insult.
In another verse he says that the back of Mehrab is always toward Ka'ba, which is an insulting remark. He says:
PEETH MEHRAB KE QIBLE KE TARAF REHTI HE
MEHVE NISBAT HAIN TAKALLUF HAMAIN MANZOOR NAHIN
In another Mirza Ghalib attacks at the sacred Islamic sanctuary of mosque by recommending that a bad place should be constructed under the mosque, which is un-doubtedly an insult the mosque that is considered as the house of Allah. He says:
MASJID KE ZAIR-ESAYA KHARABAT CHAHIYE
BHOON PAAS QIBLA-E-HAJAT CHAHIYE
In another verse he recommends that a non-believer should be buried in Ka'ba if he is sincere to his religion. This is once again in total contrast to what Islamic teachings are. A non-Muslim can do what ever good deeds but he still dies death of a non-believer and is doomed to go to hell but what Mirza Ghalib has described in this verse is no more than an insult and a mockery of the Islamic
teachings. He says:
WAFADARI BASHART-E-USTAWARI ASL EEMAN HE
MARE BUTKHANE MAIN TO KA'BE MAIN GARO BARHAMUN KO
Yet there are many verses including in the poetry of Mirza Ghalib in which he desecrated the sacred institutions of Islam. For example look at the way he disgracefully mentions about the sacred water of Zamzam.
ZAMZAM HE PE CHOOROON MUJHE KYA TAUF-E-HARAM SE
AALUDA BA MAE JAMA-E-AHRAM BUHUT HE
In the above Mirza Ghalib did not hesitate to launch a blasphemic attack on Zamzam water as well as Ihram, the religious robe which the pilgrims wear on the occasion of Hajj by saying that his Ihram which is impregnated with wine is enough for him so why should he do the circumambulation of Holy Ka'ba. In another verse he goes ahead to bring under attack the Zamzam water, mosque and Ihram all in the same verse. He says that last night he drank wine over Zamzam and then cleaned the spots of Ihram in the mosque. Read his verse and just look at this blasphemic verse.
RAAT PEE ZAMZAM PE MAE AUR MASJID MAIN
DHOEY DHABBE JAMA-E-AHRAM KE
In some other verses we find that Mirza Ghalib attempts to undervalue the importance of paradise. For example he says:
HUMKO MAALUUM HE JANNAT KE HAQEEQAT LEKIN
DIL KO KHOSH RAKHNE KA GHALIB YE KHIYAL ACHA
Note that in Holy Qur'an time and again Allah subhanuhu has underscored upon the bounties reserved for Muslims in paradise and has even called it as His promise but if Mirza Ghalib refutes all those verses and presents a work of his own fiction then isn't it a blasphemy?
In his famous verse Mirza Ghalib affronts and offends the sublime beauty of the Hoor or the paradise girls by saying that they are millions of years old.
He says:
ESI JANNAT KO KYA KARE KOI
JAHAN LAKHOON BARAS KE HOORAIN HUUN
Translation: What should a person do with such a paradise where the girls are millions of years old?
In another verse Mirza Ghalib attempts to present a novel idea, which is not at all congruent with the Qur'anic teachings. He says that in order to avoid people from obeying due to the love of reward in paradise someone should put the paradise in the hell. This is certainly not at all congruent with what is mentioned in Qur'an and as Mirza Ghalib has no authority to mutilate or distort the divine teaching this verse of Ghalib belongs to the domain of blasphemy.
These are just a few examples otherwise the Deewan of Mirza Ghalib is loaded with such verses which are intolerable for a Muslim and hence Ghalib's poetry collection should not be appreciated by Muslims what to talk of teaching it in the schools and universities. A verse of Mirza Ghalib will itself demonstrate what sort of attachment he had with the religion. He says:
Chooruun ga main na us but-e-kafir ka poojna
Choore na khulq mujh ko kafir kahe beghair
Similarly in another verse Ghalib declares his anti-Islamic ways by saying:
Huun munharif na kiyuun rah-o-rasm-e-sawab se
Tairha laga he qut qalam-e-sur nawisht ko
In short the poetry of Meer Taqi Meer as well as Mirza Ghalib should not be propagated among Muslims and it should be banned in Pakistan where it is being taught in the curricular courses.

Mr.Beebani,it is your skewed and absolutely closed minded version of Islaam that is probabely more unislamic than the verses u have quoted. At no point of time Mir and Gaalib have questioned the basic principles of islaam of love and peace.
Howewher, they always have come down heavily on the fallacies peretrated in the name of religion by brokers of religion .
All they have done is they have frankly exposed what they think are fallacies perpetrated in the name of religion and those things which they think are wrong. If they think that something is wrong, dont they have basic democratic right to express their opinion?
Moreover, they have never quetioned basic principles of islaam
and have criticised auxilary things which they think are wrong. These verses were written during bahadur shah jafar's rule .He was a muslim monarch and erudite muslim well versed with islaam. He never banned them.Surely,he new moreabout islaam!
You have every right to criticise gaalib and mir for blasphemy. But calling for a ban totally wrong and undemocratic.

hello people,

let us keep "religion" away from these boards.

As far as banning ghalib or anyone else... If it is not "indecent" it will NOT be deleted or banned.

thanx
gaurav
