Ali Sikandar , commonly called Jigar Moradabadi was born in Mohalla Lal Bagh , Moradabad , in the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh (UP), British India, on 6 April 1890.
His ancestors had moved to Moradabad and Azampur around the middle of the 18th Century. His father, Maulvi Ali Nazar, who was a poet, passed away when Ali was a young boy.
One of his uncles, Maulvi Ali Asghar, supported him during that difficult time. Ali got his education of Arabic and Farsi from a local madrassah. He started writing poetry in his teen years and mailed a few ghazals to Daagh Dehlavi for correction.
His formal poetry teacher (ustad) was Munshi Hayat Bakhsh (Rasa Rampuri). He moved to Gonda (also in the UP, near Lucknow), most probably in his early teens, where he resided till his death. There he became very close to Asghar Gondwi, who was 6 years older than him. Asghar acted as both a friend and as an older brother for him. They together went through different struggles in life.
There was a time when Jigar was in his late 20's that both of them traveled city to city selling eye-glasses for an Agra based company.
Ali used the takhallus Jigar, which means liver in Farsi, Urdu, and Punjabi. It is commonly used as a symbol for the trials and tribulations of a lover as it is believed that it gets burnt in love.
Asghar tried to help Jigar in managing his affairs. Jigar showed deep reverence for Asghar, for his piety and the help he extended to him. Asghar and his wife also arranged a marriage for Jigar, who was married to Naseem, a sister of Asghar's wife. The marriage was arranged after Jigar had promised to Asghar that he would quit alcohol after the marriage. Jigar had become an alcohol addict in his late 20's. Perhaps Asghar believed that Jigar would be able to get rid of his bad habit in this way. When Jigar could not do what he had promised, Asghar asked him to divorce Naseem, a command he obeyed.
Those were very difficult days for Jigar as his financial condition was very bad. Still he had a generous heart and he would help the people whom he thought were more needy than him. His fame increased with time and he became one of the best loved poets in India. He was one of those Urdu poets who had opted to stay in India at the time of partition of India in 1947.
In the first half of the 20th Century, he was among the foremost poets of Urdu ghazal in India, along with Hasrat Mohani (1875-1951), Fani Badayuni (1879-1941), and Asghar Gondwi (1884-1936). Jigar did not have a lot of formal education, but his ghazal is known for its simplicity and feelings of love.
In his 40's, Jigar did his taoba (repentance) and quit alcohol for good . He subsequently married Naseem, about 15 years after they had divorced. They remained childless. Jigar performed the Haj in 1953. With time, the fame of Jigar spread throughout the Indian sub-continent. He became one of the most sought after poets and young men flocked to him. He was also invited to mushairas in Pakistan, and he attended some mushairas in Lahore.
The glare of wealth did not change Jigar and he remained the same simple hearted and polite man with a generous heart. He was always sympathetic to the weak and the poor, and was a deeply religious and kindhearted man. Both him and Asghar Gondwi had said bai'at (oath of allegiance) to Qazi Abdul Ghani Mangalori (Mangalore is in District Saharanpur, Northwestern UP), a respected sufi. Indian Movie Industry asked him many times to write songs for Indian movies, but he was not interested. He passed away on 6 September 1960 in Gonda, UP, India, and is buried there.
The collections of his poetry include: Daagh-e Jigar , Shola-e Toor , and Aatish-e Gul . For his services to the Urdu language, he was awarded an honorary D. Litt. Degree by the Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, UP, India, the second poet after Allama Iqbal to whom this rare honor has been bestowed.
It is said that a picture says a thousand words. The picture attached to the above video perhaps says much more. It shows a polite, cultured, and decent man, at peace with himself and of a dervish nature. It also depicts a collective sadness and nostalgia for an age and culture passed now.

Jigar Moradabadi belonged to the classical school of ghazal writing and was a mentor to Majrooh Sultanpuri, who became a prominent lyricist in the Indian film industry and penned many popular songs in Urdu and Hindi.
Jigar was extremely popular with the masses, who regarded him as the People's Poet.
Jigar Moradabadi has become even more popular since his death, as his poetry continues to gain ever more admirers, particularly among film-goers, who are familiar with his lyrics.
He never received any formal higher education. No university could have taught him what he taught himself in his chosen field. He is now regarded as one of the all-time great Urdu poets. Jigar was only the second poet in the history of Aligarh Muslim University to be awarded an honorary D.Litt - the first one to receive this honour was Allama Iqbal, which speaks volumes about Jigar's standing and reputation. He is already being mentioned in the same breath as Iqbal and Ghalib.
Faiz Ahmad Faiz, the distinguished Urdu poet and academic, regarded Jigar Moradabadi as a master craftsman in his field.Aligarh was one of Jigar's favourite cities. A former student of Aligarh Muslim University, who often attended mushairas at which both Faiz and Jigar were participants, recalls that Jigar would steal the show with his rendition of his own ghazals and was the life and soul of the mushaira.
Malik Ram, the renowned Urdu scholar and a leading authority on Ghalib, knew Jigar personally and wrote an appreciative article about him in the June 1959 issue of Nuqoosh - the reputable Lahore monthly Urdu literary journal. In 1974, Malik Ram also included Jigar, along with Ghalib, in his award-winning book "Woh Surten Ilahi" (The Immortals) - biographical essays on nine giants in the Urdu literary world.
Research on Jigar Moradabadi and his poetry is ongoing and is also encouraged and supported by the Government of India sponsored National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language. Jigar's poetry is now an established academic subject in Urdu departments at many universities.

It was in Moradabad that Jigar received his primary education, Later, at 12 he went with his uncle, an Inspector of Police in Kurwi in Banda district. Here his uncle arranged for him to be tutored in Arabic and Persian. Later his uncle was transferred to Lucknow and Jigar continued his studies in Lucknow, where he received schooling till the IX th Standard. He was not very educated, he spoke some English and adequate Arabic and Persian. When he was fifteen he lost his father.
Jigar's poetic talent though was not dependent on his education but his background and environment.
His great grandfather, Hafiz Noor Mohammad and grandfather, Hafiz Maulavi Amjad Ali were poets. His father, Maulavi Ali Nazar was also a poet with a published Diwan. His uncle, Ali Zafar, with whom Jigar had spent almost his entire adolescence, was a poet too. Likewise, Jigar's father's elder brother, Maulavi Ali Akbar was a too and it he who took Jigar under his wing and started his training as a poet. Though some say that the poet Daagh was Jigar's first mentor it does not seem possible because Daagh died when Jigar was just fifteen, also Daagh spent the last fifteen years of his life in Hyderabad which is in The Deccan and faraway from UP where Jigar lived. Perhaps Jigar sent him some ghazals by post, but there is no evidence of his having visited Daagh.
Rasa Rampuri was the first to tutor Jigar properly in poetry. His talent was later polished by Asghar Godvi. Jigar sold glasses for a living and once by chance met Asghar Godvi, who too dealt in the same trade. Asghar Godvi besides selling spectacles was also a poet and a sufi, he polished not just Jigar's poetic taste but also influenced his spiritual ideas.
Jigar is considered to be one of the leading ghazal poets in Urdu. In his time the poets had become influenced by the experiments with poetry that Iqbal had tried, and hence had moved away from the ghazal. Jigar though refused to give up the ghazal though he was criticized for it heavily. There were many upheavals in his time, the World wars, India's struggle for Independence,etc. Poetry had taken new meanings, it was used to express the new social and political ideas that were taking root. Poets had now a social conscience, they did not write to merely entertain the readers. The ghazal was a reminder of the courts and a more self-indulgent and decadent way of life. Hence most of the poets of the time moved away from it and towards other poetic expressions. Jigar though stuck to the ghazal genre and in doing so added a lot to urdu poetry.
His earlier poetry was about the usual subjects of ghazals, women, wine, lost love, heartache, but later many events shook him and he wrote on more important and relevant subjects. The Bengal famine and the extreme violence hat gripped India during the partition with Pakistan were two such events that made a great impact on him, but he did not lose his belief in the ultimate victory of human values over all misfortunes or over the madness that had gripped the country.
His first two collections are Daagh-e-Jigar and Shola-e-Toor. His third Aatish-e-Gul, established his reputation as a noteworthy ghazal poet who could give expression to new sensibilities in the traditional form of ghazal. In the third collection he is a changed poet who is aware of the unpleasant and even terrible facts of life. He talks of them in his ghazals without damaging the aesthetic and literary values of the form of ghazal...............
