He who has given up all desires and moves free from attachment,egoism and thirst for enjoyment attains peace.

प्रकृतेः क्रियमाणानि गुणैः कर्माणि सर्वशः ।
अहंकारविमूढात्मा कर्ताहमिति मन्यते ॥

वास्तव में सम्पूर्ण कर्म सब प्रकार से प्रकृति के गुणों द्वारा किए जाते हैं, तो भी जिसका अन्तःकरण अहंकार से मोहित हो रहा है, ऐसा अज्ञानी 'मैं कर्ता(शरीर)हूँ' ऐसा मानता है।

समष्टि शक्ति ( प्रकृति) से शरीर,नदी आदि बढ़ते घटते हैं उसी तरह प्रकृति से ही मनुष्य की देखना चलना खाना पीना आदि क्रियाएँ होती हैं परन्तु मनुष्य अज्ञानवश स्वयं को उनका करता मान लेता है।
प्रकृति से उत्पन्न गुणों सत्व,रज,तम का कार्य होने से बुध्ही अहंकार मन पंचमहाभूत,दस इन्द्रियाँ और इन्द्रियुं के पांच विषय(शब्द,रूप,रस,गंध,रसना) ये भी प्रकृति के गुण कहे जाते हैं।
इस पद में भगवान् स्पष्ट करते हैं की संपूर्ण क्रियाएँ प्रकृति के गुणों द्वारा की जाती हैं, स्वरुप(आत्मा) द्वारा नहीं।

O Arjuna,just as a blazing fire turns wood to ashes ; similarly the fire of knowledge turns all reactions from fruitive activities to ashes.




हि ज्ञानेन सदृशं पवित्रमिह विद्यते
तत्स्वयं योगसंसिद्धः कालेनात्मनि विन्दति



इस संसार में ज्ञान के समान पवित्र करने वाला निःसंदेह कुछ भी नहीं है। उस ज्ञान को कितने ही काल से कर्मयोग द्वारा शुद्धान्तःकरण हुआ मनुष्य अपने-आप ही आत्मा में पा लेता है॥4/38


In this world there is nothing that exists as purifying,in comparision with transcendental knowledge.One perfected by the science of uniting the individual consciousness with the Ultimate consciousness automatically attains that knowledge in the self in course of time.

कर्मयोगी कर्मों के फल का त्याग करके भगवत्प्राप्ति रूप शान्ति को प्राप्त होता है और सकामपुरुष कामना की प्रेरणा से फल में आसक्त होकर बँधता है॥5/12॥


A performer of prescribed activities giving up the desire for results of activities obtain uninterrupted peace; but a performer of fruitive activities becomes bound by obsession to the results of actions due to desire to enjoy the fruit of actions.

ये हि संस्पर्शजा भोगा दुःखयोनय एव ते ।
आद्यन्तवन्तः कौन्तेय न तेषु रमते बुधः ॥


जो ये इन्द्रिय तथा विषयों के संयोग से उत्पन्न होने वाले सब भोग हैं, यद्यपि विषयी पुरुषों को सुखरूप भासते हैं, तो भी दुःख के ही हेतु हैं और आदि-अन्तवाले अर्थात अनित्य हैं। इसलिए हे अर्जुन! बुद्धिमान विवेकी पुरुष उनमें नहीं रमता॥5/22॥

O Arjuna, those pleasures arising from the sense contacting sense objects are indeed the source of misery only; subject to a beginning and an end; therefore the spiritually intelligent never take delight in them.

शक्नोतीहैव यः सोढुं प्राक्शरीरविमोक्षणात्* ।
कामक्रोधोद्भवं वेगं स युक्तः स सुखी नरः ॥


जो साधक इस मनुष्य शरीर में, शरीर का नाश होने से पहले-पहले ही काम-क्रोध से उत्पन्न होने वाले वेग को सहन करने में समर्थ हो जाता है, वही पुरुष योगी है और वही सुखी है॥5/23॥



That person who is able to neutralize in this life, the physical mental and emotional urges generated from desire and passion, before the death of the body; he is fully self controlled and certainly happy.

भूमिरापोऽनलो वायुः खं मनो बुद्धिरेव च ।

अपरेयमितस्त्वन्यां प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम्* ।

पृथ्वी, जल, अग्नि, वायु, आकाश, मन, बुद्धि और अहंकार भी- इस प्रकार ये आठ प्रकार से विभाजित मेरी प्रकृति है। यह आठ प्रकार के भेदों वाली तो अपरा अर्थात मेरी जड़ प्रकृति है और हे महाबाहो! इससे दूसरी को, जिससे यह सम्पूर्ण जगत धारण किया जाता है, मेरी जीवरूपा परा अर्थात चेतन प्रकृति जान॥6/(4-5)॥



Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, spiritual intelligence and false ego; thus these are the eightfold divisions of my external energy.

This external energy is inferior; but superior to this, you should know another, My marginal energy comprising the embodied souls of all living entities by which this material world is utilized.
